Britta's Europe Photos- Barcelona

More of Britta's pictures. Barcelona this time. Most because of her group photos and wide-angle photos. That I clearly don't have.

So here's the street I lived on, with Todd, Dave, and Janis. The girls' apartment was one street off of this street(Rambla Poblenou). In the left corner is Mercadona, our grocery. Also on the left, the second building thats peachy-colored on the top half- that's where we lived. The second floor balcony, middle door of the three. So we could sit out there and watch the people on the street. It was truly awesome.

Here's a few photos of the girls' place. Britta's bedroom (hope she doesn't mind me showing this!)- she had two beds because they had "room" for more people if necessary. But they were pretty cramped as it was, because the living spaces were small. You can see the ceiling, very common in Spain- rafters with small vaults between them, usually done with tile or brick with concrete on top. Notice she has no windows, and a brick wall. The right wall was the back wall of our other friends', John and Nate's, apartment. So you could hear them through the wall. Pretty funny.

Their kitchen. And a weird step and low doorway where you hit your head, going into the family room.

The uh, family room, I guess- a small table, weird bench of foamy couch stuff, and big doors out to the courtyard- the best part of this apartment. Weird thing is, up above where this picture was taken from is a small balcony with a door/window thing that goes into one of the bedrooms. So you hadta be quiet in here when people were asleep up there.

The courtyard. Britta liked sitting up on the balcony there for some quiet time. In the back, under the balcony, was their laundry and two more minifridges, which was nice since they had two mini fridges in the family room and no real fridge! Out here was a good place for some parties. Especially since it stayed a lot warmer in Barcelona for a lot longer than it would in, say, Chicago.

Some pictures from a small day-trip we took with our professor to an old factory-town, where the workers were housed and did their shopping and everything, all within this commune-type place. Cool architecture- elaborate brick designs.

The crypt of the church that never got built (so the whole church IS just the crypt) that was designed by Gaudí for the guy who owned and built the whole factory/town complex. But only the crypt got built.

Us on the Bus. Sounds like a Dr. Seuss book. Not sure if this was before or after the bus driver backed into something in the parking lot while we were walking around, and shattered the back window. That looked awesome. Lots of glass :)

Pictures of IAAC- our school. A day it rained there were a bunch of umbrellas. Later I'll post the pictures from Jenny's camera that she took for me cause I didn't have mine. But apparently Britta though it looked cool too. It did.

Something else that happened during the rain- our school flooded. And yes our school looked like a giant warehouse. That's Jason.

Mercadona! Here's what each and every grocery store everywhere had- dozens if not hundreds of pork hocks hanging up to buy. Hung by the hooves. They ranged in price from 60 euro to a couple hundred euro. And then you just slice off your own deli ham from the leg :)

I guess these little guys were for eating. Whole piglets!!

When we walked around for a couple days with our visiting professor, while Chris was visiting also, we saw a bunch of stuff. This is one of the most famous Modern buildings in the world. Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion for the 1929 World Exposition. I could explain why its so famous... Its small though yes.

Me and Chris waiting while said professor checked it out "inside" (not really any inside cause it was just a roof and disjointed walls, a pavilion).

This is what we look like with beards. I don't like it all thick on my chin and neck, but that's the only place it would grow well. Sides of my face couldn't grow jack. So it makes me look...something.

This is right before I took a great picture of all these baskets of fruit, at the market.

I dunno what we're all looking at. Chris, Me, Sarah (prof), John, Todd, Alex, Scott.

One of many "Arc de Triomf"s from around Europe. There's on in Rome, one in Paris...everyone had a triumph and built an arch to commemorate it, I guess. Todd, Alex, John, Me.

Another old factory, converted to an art museum. With a giant black door. Me, Chris, John, Todd, Scott, Alex.

Our gang. Chris, Me, John, Scott, Sarah, Todd.

Our second to last day in Barcelona, we did a bunch of stuff that we had missed. There was a big city park we hadn't seen, and it had this grotto. Dave, Jessica, Britta, Alex, Me.

You might remember seeing this, the Labyrinth. People in the neighborhood didn't even know it was here, when we were trying to find it!

Jessica taking a picture over the top- I have a picture of her doing this, from across the Labyrinth.

Britta, Jessica, Me, Dave, Alex. The reason I posted both of these is that Britta took the first, we started all walking down the steps, she realized it was too dark and wanted to retake it- so we walked back up the steps and resumed our places- and its amazing that we're in exactly the same spots, after getting up and walking away. We thought it was amazing, anyway...

A shot of the Barcelona subway. Dave, Me, Alex. The trains were nice.

More Mercadona!

More pork legs. It was weird how they were just sitting there. You could go grab one and throw it in your cart. So strange.

A shot of our classroom, the weird light up above us is the thing we made earlier in the semester...

Another shot of the warehouse part, without the flood waters :)

The front of the school. Classroom areas up there behind the frosted windows. It was a factory, like most everything else in the neighborhood seemingly...

Our last night in Barcelona. Thanksgiving at an English pub. Spensive, but worth it. Britta, Me, Jessica, John, Dave, Shawna, Sharon (undergrad from UIC who John knew, who was also studying in Barcelona), Alex, Kat, Nate, Katie.

Post-Thanksgiving activity at the bar/restaurant. (They even had the Dallas Cowboys game televised, pretty funny).
